Rei Ayanami (Tentative Name) is a clone from the Ayanami Series introduced in Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, created as a replacement for the Rei who appeared in the first two Rebuild films. Unlike her predecessor, this Rei has no memories of her previous life and initially possesses little sense of individuality, carrying out Gendo Ikari's orders without question and showing almost no emotional attachment to the people around her.

She is designated Ayanami-Type No.006 and pilots Evangelion Mark.09 while wearing the black plugsuit associated with the unit. As an Evangelion pilot, Rei possesses the physical and mental capabilities required to synchronize with and operate an Eva, allowing her to fight Angels and other Evangelions. Over the course of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, her experiences outside NERV gradually lead her to develop curiosity, emotional awareness, and a desire to establish an identity of her own, eventually learning to farm, attend school, form relationships, and choose a name for herself.
